Parker County Courthouse
Project Type: Historic Restoration & Repairs
Location: Weatherford, Texas
Project Description
Komatsu Architecture’s Historic Preservation Studio partnered with Parker County over several years to support the restoration and systems upgrades of the historic Parker County Courthouse. The firm’s involvement began in 2015 with a feasibility study focused on roof repairs and extended through multiple project phases of design, permitting, and construction administration.
The project’s scope included roof and window restoration, investigation and repair of the courtroom ceiling, HVAC system upgrades, and the restoration of interior finishes. Throughout the process, Komatsu Architecture worked closely with the Texas Historical Commission (THC), securing necessary permits and ensuring full compliance with appropriate preservation principals.
The firm prepared construction documents for both exterior repairs and interior restoration. This included work on plaster, wood flooring, and ceiling elements in the District Courtroom, addressing issues related to water damage and aging infrastructure. Komatsu also coordinated mechanical system improvements, including relocating the building’s chiller and integrating new fan coil units.
From 2021 to early 2022, the County removed the existing interior chiller and replaced it with a remote version. Following this installation, the building required several months to stabilize humidity levels before the interior conditions returned to equilibrium.
The final phase of the project took place from November 2024 to February 2025. During this period, Komatsu provided construction administration services to close out the project. This included the preparation and submittal of the State Antiquities Landmark (SAL) Completion Report in January 2025, which confirms that all work completed is in accordance with preservation directives.
The success of the Parker County Courthouse project was driven by the Historic Preservation Studio’s expertise in preservation standards and regulatory processes. The team’s knowledge guided the project through each phase of THC review and compliance, ensuring the integrity of the building’s historic character while incorporating the necessary upgrades.
